Subject: Qualifying Top Speeds - Magny-Cours
These comparisons only use the top speeds recorded through the regular speed
trap during the Saturday Qualifying sessions. This means that, at most events,
there are comparisons that are fairly meaningless because of some problem that
affected one or more drivers during one particular session.

The first table compares the 2006 team/driver combination with the equivalent
2007 team/driver - the same driver if possible, otherwise the 2006 driver is
compared to his 2007 replacement. This is intended as a team comparison, but
the first table is also of interest - but should be read with caution.

Subject: Overtaking Statistics #8 - Magny-Cours
Introduction for New Readers
============================

2007 is the tenth season that I have posted these amateur overtaking
analyses. My intention was to allow easier comparisons between Grands
Prix, seasons, circuits, drivers, etc.

In order to make any meaningful and/or useful observations it is essential
to produce the stats in as consistent a way as possible. To do this I have
devised several "rules" that I try to follow for each event. Please note
before posting to complain that I missed an obvious passing manoeuvre that
it has probably been excluded because of one of my "rules". The rules are
outlined in the "Disclaimer" below - please read it.

This analysis was mainly derived from the official FIA lap chart, which is
usually available from www.fia.com, http://forix.autosport.com or
www.autosport.com/f1/ on race day or the following day. The original charts
remain copyright of the FIA.

Other excellent Formula One websites are available. This analysis is
completely and totally unofficial.

Disclaimer
==========

For the purposes of this analysis, I only count what I will term "genuine"
passing manoeuvres, which means that I always exclude:

a) any place changes made during pit stops
b) all lapping or unlapping manoeuvres
c) any place changes made during the first lap

Hopefully, a) & b) are obvious. c) is because although lap one is often the
best opportunity to make up places, it is also not typical of the rest of
the race, and so, for the purpose of comparing races with other races and
seasons with other seasons, it is simpler to exclude lap one completely. I
do summarise the changes on lap one later in the post.

For the purposes of this analysis a "pit stop" encompasses the slowing down
lap and the out lap, since any passes during those laps MIGHT be due to the
driver slowing down or speeding up.

Passes are not counted in these stats UNLESS the gained position is held
until the start/finish line is next crossed and so gets recorded onto the
lap chart. I try to ignore anything that isn't recorded in the lap chart,
even if it was seen on TV.

These are the passes I read for the 2007 French GP:

Lap Place Passer (Passed)
==========================================
2 7 Alonso (Rosberg)
4 14 Wurz (Speed)
5 15 Sato (Speed)
19 16 Sutil (Albers) [team-mates]
23 7 Alonso (Fisichella)
33 5 Alonso (Heidfeld)

That's 6 passes in total, compared to 5 last season.

Most: 3 Alonso

The Last 10 Seasons
===================

For reasons of space I have removed the data for 1997 from this table. In
1997 there were 318 passes in 16 races, a race average of 20.

who frequently starts from pole position has very little chance to gain
places while one who usually starts at the back of the grid has a good
chance of gaining places.

doing much damage. David Coulthard was an exception, parking his Red Bull in
the gravel at Priory. Jenson Button was suffering from back trouble and will
take no part in this afternoon's session.

No major incidents although there were a few spins, including several from
Felipe Massa. Williams, Toyota and Toro Rosso continued to show some
unexpected speed. Jenson Button was back in action this morning and was
able to catch up some of his lost track time without showing a great deal
of speed.

To raczej wynik braku przyczepno¶ci jechania blisko za bolidem. Zreszt±
Kubica sam powiedzia³, ¿e wiedzia³, ¿e Massa raczej nie ma szans go
wyprzedziæ, gdy tylko na jakim¶ zakrêcie jedzie tu¿ za nim.

Some people like to save the data from the newsgroups, so I'll post it anyway.

Weather: Air 23, Track 46, Humidity 44%, Dry

Notes: In Q1 Davidson went off into the gravel while warming his tyres. The
resultant yellow flags compromised Jenson Button's lap. Nico Rosberg's
Williams suffered a mechanical problem - thought to be a misfire. Kimi
Räikkönen looked set for pole, but a mistake out of Woodcote lost him a
little time, just enough for Lewis Hamilton to steal the pole with a lap
that was considerably quicker than his previous effort.

Takuma Sato decided to switch to the spare car on race day, forcing a pit
lane start.

Note: Since 2006 the grid has been decided on a three-period knockout system.
The "pole time" is no longer necessarily the fastest time set during qualifying.

There have been 40 GPs at Silverstone,
15 have been won from pole (last was Alonso in 2006),
12 have been won from second (Räikkönen in 2007),
seven have been won from third (Montoya in 2005),
three have been won from fourth (MS in 2004),
three have been won from fifth (Herbert in 1995),
and two from lower - Collins (6th in 1958) & Fittipaldi (7th in 1975).

Average Qualifying Position of race winner = 2.500.

Subject: [Belated] Top Qualifying Speeds - Silverstone
These comparisons only use the top speeds recorded through the regular speed
trap during the Saturday Qualifying sessions. This means that, at most events,
there are comparisons that are fairly meaningless because of some problem that
affected one or more drivers during one particular session.

The first table compares the 2006 team/driver combination with the equivalent
2007 team/driver - the same driver if possible, otherwise the 2006 driver is
compared to his 2007 replacement. This is intended as a team comparison, but
the first table is also of interest - but should be read with caution.

The second table ranks the eleven teams in order of largest increase in
top speed, with Toro Rosso making the biggest advance at Silverstone, and
Ferrari the smallest. (At some events some teams have only managed a
slower top speed than they did in 2006.)

Here are the rankings at each 2007 event to date together with the
average ranking for the season so far.

Subject: Overtaking Statistics #9 - Silverstone
Introduction for New Readers
============================

Disclaimer
==========

These are the passes I read for the 2007 British GP:

Lap Place Passer (Passed)
==========================================
2 13 Rosberg (Wurz) [team-mates]
2 18 Massa (Davidson)
2 17 Massa (Button)
2 16 Massa (Barrichello)
3 12 Rosberg (Speed)
3 15 Massa (Liuzzi)
4 14 Massa (Wurz)
5 13 Massa (Speed)
7 12 Massa (Rosberg)
8 10 Massa (Coulthard)
11 9 Massa (Trulli)
12 5 Fisichella (Kovalainen) [team-mates]
30 14 Rosberg (Wurz) [team-mates]
32 12 Rosberg (Trulli)
32 13 Wurz (Trulli)
42 7 Kovalainen (Fisichella) [team-mates]

That's 16 passes in total, compared to 6 last season.

Most: 9 Massa

For reasons of space I have removed the data for 1997 from this table. In
1997 there were 318 passes in 16 races, a race average of 20.

chance of gaining places.
